Description

Gabra ("gift offering" in Ethiopian) is the daughter of Kgosi and Masozi, the sister of Ntombi, Lumusi, Kayin, and Limbani, the mate of Dalmar, and the mother of Sauda and Xolani.

Gabra and her sisters Ntombi and Lumusi are born to the Canyon Pride, a pride that lives in a deep and long canyon that would put the Great Gorge in the Pride Lands to shame. They have lived here for generations, ever since their first king settled down here with his harem of females, and many in the pride are decended from him. Gabra in particular is decended from the first king's most favorite son, the one who succeeded him and thus who's line became the royal line. Her father, Kgosi, is that lion's great-great-grandson. But just because she's royalty doesn't mean she gets any special treatment.

In fact, it's quite the opposite.

You see, the Canyon Pride is not like the other civilized lion kingdoms. In the Cliff Lands, females are seen as weak, pathetic, and useless. They are seen as nothing more than servants and breeding vessels to the much more important and powerful males. They're no less than property to the eyes of the males. So when King Kgosi ended up with not one, not two, but three daughters, he was most displeased. Thus, he takes up another mate in hopes of breeding a male heir off of her. It matters not that Masozi is the lioness that Kgosi's father wed him to. "Weddings" are just handing one lioness off onto another male in their society, often for a price. It's not uncommon for males to have more than one wife.

Gabra is luckier than her sisters in that she is sent off to the Grass Lands at a relatively young age to be betrothed to their Crowned Prince, Prince Dalmar, thus she doesn't end up suffering nearly as much abuse as they end up suffering. However, she's seen a lot of injustice and abuse in her young life, and she already knows that once she's Queen of the Grass Lands, she's going to do something about that injustice one way or another.

As she grows, she fights for the rights of lionesses, stating that they deserve the same rights as males. For instance, in many lands, including the Grass Lands, females are not allowed to inherit if there is a proper male heir. Gabra sees to change this, and makes it clear to her future husband that if they have a girl first, she will inherit the throne as the first born, regardless of whether they have a boy next or not. Dalmar agrees to this. She also tells him that they will rule together as equals, having the same power as the other. Dalmar also agrees to this.

When Dalmar becomes King and Gabra his Queen, she immediately increases her campaigning. At first her campaigns were merely in the Grass Lands and in the Pride Lands when they visited as cubs. Now, as Queen, she intended to use her power to spread the words of equality across many kingdoms, not just her own and the Pride Lands. Many kingdoms disagree with her, none more so than the Deep Lands, who tell Dalmar to "control his bitch like a real lion."

Dalmar immediately cuts off his allegiance with the Deep Lands for that comment, and threatens war should they ever say such things about his wife again.

Gabra passes on her teachings of gender equailty to her two cubs, and in the end dies happily knowing that her daughter plans to continue her work in her place.

NOTES: Gabra here is based off of Cub E from Possible new playmates for Simba and Nala? I decided that, like Vitani in TLK 2, she would gain ear-rings as she grew. :)

And I though her mate was a fighter for change. She's a strong one too.
